My Recommendations and Great Reads for Autumn
As the days get shorter, flipping on a warm-light lamp or lighting a candle to read is a delightful evening experience. I know many people have “reading corners” in their homes where they have a special chair or bench with fluffy pillows and blankets - all ready to curl up and dive into a good book. Maybe you enjoy reading outside and finding a beautiful tree with changing leaves is the best place to lay out a blanket and read for a while. However and wherever you like to read, fall is a great time to do so.
This season leans into spooky and mysterious themes. It also brings about feelings of transformation and change. There’s a different genre for everyone - but this month I’m sharing some fall favorites if you’re looking for some book inspiration!
“The October Country” by Ray Bradbury
Nothing captures the eerie spirit of fall quite like Ray Bradbury’s The October Country. This collection of short stories delves into the mysterious, perfect for those dark autumn nights. Bradbury masterfully blends the ordinary with the supernatural, offering tales that are both unsettling and thought-provoking. If you're in the mood for something a little spooky but also reflective, check out this one!
“Pumpkinheads” by Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks
If you’re looking for something lighthearted and visually appealing, Pumpkinheads is a graphic novel that describes the essence of fall. Written by Rainbow Rowell and illustrated by Faith Erin Hicks, this story follows two friends, Deja and Josiah, as they work their last shift at a pumpkin patch. It’s a charming and nostalgic tale of friendship, adventure, and the bittersweetness of saying goodbye to one chapter of life and embracing the next. Fall is all about transformation, and so is this book.
“Rebecca” by Daphne du Maurier
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is a gothic piece that is ideal for a cool and moody fall day. The novel tells the story of an unnamed narrator who marries a wealthy widower and moves to his mansion, only to find herself haunted by the lingering presence of his first wife, Rebecca. With its suspenseful plot, Rebecca is a perfect blend of romance, mystery, and psychological intrigue you’ll enjoy on an autumn night.
For those with kids, here are some great Children’s Books they might enjoy:
"Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert
This beautifully illustrated book takes young readers on a journey with Leaf Man, a character made entirely of autumn leaves. As the wind blows, Leaf Man floats away, and children get to explore various landscapes created with leaves. This book encourages creativity and inspires kids to look at nature in a new way.
"The Little Yellow Leaf" by Carin Berger
This is a story about a little yellow leaf that is afraid to let go of its tree. As winter approaches, it watches as other leaves fall, until it finds another leaf that is also holding on. Together, they muster the courage to face the unknown. This book is a beautiful metaphor for courage and friendship and can prepare your little one for the winter months ahead!
There are so many good options for books during the autumn season, these are just a few! What are some of your favorites? I hope you find mysteries, thrillers, romance or non-fiction reads to help get you in the mood for the slower months ahead.
