Bikes, Trikes, and E-bikes: It's National Bike Month!

Happy National Bike Month!

Whether you’re using training wheels or are an avid cyclist, there’s no doubt that biking is a fun and efficient means of transportation. This two-wheeled technology has been around since the 1880’s and offers people of many ages and abilities the opportunity to participate. Biking is great for our health, our environment, and our neighborhoods.

In this blog I’ll share some of the different styles of bikes, safety tips, and why biking is great for our neighborhoods. Keep reading for some additional resources on the best biking tips and tricks and when and where to purchase one.

ROAD BIKES

Road bikes are primarily used for fitness riding, commuting, or racing. They’re meant to be aerodynamic and offer shapes and styles that help make the bike go faster. Tires are usually slimmer and seats smaller. They work great on paved roads and designated bike paths, but might struggle on gravel or in slippery conditions.

BEACH CRUISERS

Designed for leisure riding, beach cruisers are comfortable and wide bikes that offer more cushion and support. They’re intended for daytime easy rides, primarily on flat surfaces. They often come with baksets or other attachments and can come in fun colors for a relaxed and easy ride. Beach cruisers are not intended for long distances or for racing, so keep that in mind.

ELECTRIC BIKES (E-BIKES)

With upcoming popularity, e-bikes definitely turn heads. Although they come at a higher price point, e-bikes offer significant assistance with hills and offer a gentle help for riders who are less athletically inclined. These bikes have a battery that can be charged in between sessions and are great for commuters looking for a quicker way to get to work.

Another thing you’ll want to keep in mind while biking is proper safety procedures. As always, wear a helmet. Only bike in designated areas and make sure to follow all traffic laws. Check your tire pressure, your handlebars, and your seat for proper alignment and safety.

There are many accessories for bike riding - some safer than others. When choosing to tow a child or pet behind you on your bike, make sure to read all outlined safety features to ensure your passenger is joining you safely.

Bike riding is an excellent way to meet new people and create community. Check out some of your local bike shops for group rides or hangouts. Bikes are known to be the first step of freedom for kids, chasing their friends around the neighborhood on two wheels. Biking is a great way to stay active, see new places, and try new things. I’m glad we get a whole month to celebrate!
