Example Itinerary: 3 days on the Emerald Isle

Sometimes the planning of the trip can be just as fun as the trip itself!

I’ve put together a “mock itinerary” showcasing some of Ireland’s greatest hits. Although three days isn’t nearly enough to see the entire country, you can get a taste of the culture, people, and landscape by exploring a few regions and cities.

So pack your bags (or imaginary bags) as we venture across the Atlantic to the Emerald Isle!

Day 1: History, Literature, and the Perfect Pint in Dublin

Start your trip by diving into the heart of Irish culture and history right in the capital city.

Morning: The Book of Kells and Trinity College

  • Marvel at the 9th-century illuminated manuscript and walk through the breathtaking Long Room Library.

  • Link for Tickets: Book of Kells Experience | Trinity College Dublin

  • Lunch: Grab a hearty, traditional Irish lunch near the lively Temple Bar district.

Afternoon: Kilmainham Gaol

  • Take a guided tour of this former prison. It offers an emotional and essential look into the heroes and struggles of Irish independence. (Pre-booking is essential!)

Late Afternoon: Guinness Storehouse

Evening: Enjoy dinner and seek out a pub for a traditional "trad" music session to experience authentic Irish craic (fun).

Day 2: The Wild Atlantic Way & Cliffs of Moher

Day two is dedicated to Ireland's dramatic west coast. Pro Tip: Booking a full-day guided coach tour from Dublin is highly recommended to save on driving time.

Morning: Depart from Dublin early, heading west across the country.

Midday: Cliffs of Moher

Afternoon: The Burren

  • Travel through this unique, lunar-like landscape of protected limestone karst.

Late Afternoon: Stop in Galway City

  • Walk the medieval streets, see the Spanish Arch, and soak up the unique artistic atmosphere of this coastal city.

Evening: Return to Dublin (or consider staying overnight in a western city like Galway or Ennis for a more leisurely pace).

Day 3: Ancient Castles and Coastal Calm

For your final day, explore Ireland's iconic medieval past and its stunning monastic ruins in the beautiful countryside south of Dublin.

Morning: Rock of Cashel (County Tipperary)

  • Visit one of Ireland’s most spectacular archaeological sites: a majestic medieval fortress perched dramatically atop a limestone rock.

  • Link for Information & Tickets: The Rock of Cashel | Heritage Ireland

Late Morning: Enjoy a scenic drive through Ireland's picturesque rolling countryside.

Lunch: Stop for lunch in a charming, small Irish town.

Afternoon: Glendalough, County Wicklow

  • Explore the serene glacial valley and the impressive 6th-century monastic settlement of St. Kevin, featuring the iconic Round Tower and ancient church ruins.

  • Link for Visitor Centre Info: Glendalough Visitor Centre

Evening: Enjoy a final, memorable dinner in Dublin before saying goodbye to this beautiful country!

How fun does this sound?! Even writing this blog got me excited to go. Ireland is known for its beautiful landscapes and wonderful people, it’s no wonder it’s a popular European destination spot. I sure do love Omaha, but sometimes, it’s great to get out and adventure. What trips do you have coming up? What trips do you want to plan?
