Home Decor Trends: What We're Seeing in 2023
Ah, home design trends. The choices we make can stick in our memories (for better or for worse) forever. Orange shag carpet, olive green kitchens, a farmhouse in the suburbs, 50 shades of too much grey. Trends are popular for a reason - people like the way they look! But sadly, most trends come and go, and “trendy” may only last a few years. Staying totally on trend all the time can be costly and time-consuming.
For some, following trends is a way to express creativity. Funky wild wallpaper? Let’s do it! Shiplap everywhere? Let’s go! There is nothing wrong with following trends and expressing your creativity, except when it comes to selling your home. If a house feels too trendy or its design is stuck in decades past, it may be more difficult for new buyers with different taste to get on board.
However you decide to design your home, following trends is fun! Here’s what we’ve been seeing this year and why it’s all so popular.
SEMi-OPEN CONCEPT: SOME WALLS PLEASE!
For quite some time we’ve seen everything as open-concept where each room flows into another without walls or doors. However, since 2020, we’ve seen more people move towards smaller and cozier spaces. People need home offices, quiet spaces, and separation in certain parts of the home. Semi-open is the term we’re using when describing a home that has some areas of full-open, while still offering areas for privacy.
GOODBYE GRAY, HELLO COLOR!
Neutrals had their run for a long time. As new home buyers come into the market, we’re seeing a bit more color than before. Bright-colored couches, statement wall colors, and unique decorations all bring richness to a room. Warm tones, earthy colors, and calming palettes help create interest and vibrancy into the space.
WHERE IS IT FROM AND HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
Materials matter. People are looking for furniture that is durable and lasts, not something they will have to replace next year. People are also considering how and where their furniture is being made and how the materials were sourced. It’s not always about buying the cheapest thing; people are looking for things that hold up to the test of time. Couches that have washable covers, rugs you can throw in the washer, and durable wood tables are on the rise. Companies are also being more transparent about how they make materials, as sourcing becomes a popular topic among new home buyers.
NATURAL WOOD
Warm tones with no paints or special finishes are back! Natural wood floors and cabinets are here which is a great relief. We’ve been painting and staining and resurfacing wood for a while now, but people are finding that simply the natural wood offers a classic appeal with less maintenance.
ORGANIC SHAPES AND SMOOTHING THE EDGES
We’re rounding it out. Tables, rugs, doors and decor are finding a slightly curvier shape. Think oblong mirrors, ovals instead of squares, and gentle slopes instead of harsh lines. Bookshelves with arched tops, doorframes that aren’t square, and blob-like lamps are coming onto the scene.
DOING WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL MOST AT HOME
You know what is always on trend? Curating a space that feels authentic to YOU! Whatever colors, shapes, fabrics, layouts, or woods speak to you: keep it in your home.
Trends are fun to follow, but ultimately you get to decide how your home is shaped. Take trend lists with a grain of salt; always touch base with your own unique styling first!
